| Professor Gunvor Semb graduated at the University of Oslo in 1969. After specialist training in orthodontics she joined the Oslo Cleft Palate Team in 1974 and later became Head of the Dental Unit in 1987. She has published a doctoral thesis on the Oslo Cleft Lip and Palate Growth Archive and numerous publications on the outcome of cleft care. She became Senior Lecturer in Craniofacial Anomalies at the University of Manchester in 1995 but continues to have major research links with Oslo. Professor Semb is a founding member of the Eurocleft Study, a member of the steering group of the European Union Biomed Programme in cleft lip and palate, and currently co-ordinates a multinational trial of primary cleft surgery. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Professor Bill Shaw graduated in Glasgow, Scotland in 1968. He obtained a Fellowship in Dental Surgery in 1971 and orthodontic specialisation in 1972. He published a masters thesis on Oral Orthopaedics and a doctoral thesis on the Social Implications of Dentofacial Anomalies in 1976, and 1980 respectively. Since 1983 he has been Professor of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Anomalies at the University of Manchester. His research interests include risk-benefit appraisal of orthodontic treatment and outcomes of cleft care. He currently co-ordinates the European Union cleft lip and palate programme | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

Dr. Meropi N. Sporopoulos is Professor and Head of the Orthodontic Department of the dental School at the University of Athens. She received her dental degrees from the University of Alexandria-Egypt and the University of Athens-Greece, her graduate training in Orthodontics and her Master of Science degree from the University of Michigan U.S.A. She has served as Associate Dean and as Head of the Division of Community Dentistry in the University of Athens, as President of the European Orthodontic Society, as member of the Erasmus Committee, and as honorary member of the Greek Parliament. She is the recipient of many awards and distinctions among which are included the Harry Sicher Award of the A.A.O. and the Friel Memorial Lecture of the E.O.S. She has been invited as keynote speaker in Meetings of the A.A.O. and she was an invited Research Scientist at the Anatomy and Cell Biology Department of the Medical School, University of Michigan. She is on the editorial board of the European Journal of Orthodontics. Her main research interests concern morphogenesis and dysmorphogenesis of the craniofacial complex, and the aspects of growth related to the interaction of form and function. Dr. Spyropoulos has authored 8 books and manuals 2 book chapters and more than 70 scientific papers. |
