The Departments
of Orthodontics, Faculties of Dentistry in Egypt, offer two
advanced educational programs in Orthodontics:
A two-year
program leading to the Master’s degree of Dental Sciences
in Orthodontics (MDSc Orthod).
SA minimum
of 24 months program, leading to the Doctoral degree of Dental
Sciences in Orthodontics (DDSc Orthod). The candidates must
hold a MDSc Orthod to be eligible for the registration in
the DDSc Orthod program. Candidates in the two programs will
be qualified to have a greater depth of research, academic,
educational and clinical experiences in Orthodontics.

MASTER’S
DEGREE OF DENTAL SCIENCES
IN ORTHODONTICS (MDSc Orthod)

The Master’s degree of Dental Sciences
in Orthodontics (MDSc Orthod) is a full-time mandatory attendance
of two years of postgraduate theoretical, practical and clinical
program requiring completion of course requirements and a research
thesis. The first year is mainly composed of basic
science subjects. The second year encompasses a core program
of orthodontics (major subject), basic related subjects, and
clinical orthodontics. At the end of the first academic year,
the candidates must pass a qualifying examination in all subjects
in order to be eligible for registration of their research thesis.
The research thesis program: By
successfully passing the final examination at the end of the
first year, and within eight months, each candidate can start
a research thesis program in a specified orthodontic problem.
The Chairperson of the Department of Orthodontics and the Dental
Scientific Committee must approve the research protocol. After
a minimum of 12 months of the approval date, the candidate can
submit the results of the research as a thesis. The candidate
presents and defends the thesis. The thesis will be discussed
in public arbitrated by three independent referees. After the
successful public defense of the candidate, the Scientific Committee
will approve the thesis.
The clinical orthodontic requirements:
A specified number of original cases of malocclusions will be
assigned to each candidate. These cases must be orthodontically
treated to the satisfaction of the Department Scientific Board.
The treated cases must cover different Classes of dental malocclusions,
and must show that the candidate mastered orthodontic biomechanics
and the associated different fixed, removable, and functional
appliances. Each candidate will present to the examination board
at least seven cases, with full records, two of them must be
related to surgical orthodontics.

DOCTORAL
DEGREE OF DENTAL SCIENCES
IN ORTHODONTICS (DDSc Orthod)

To be eligible for registration
in this program, the student must:
- Hold a Master’s degree of Dental Sciences in Orthodontics
(MDSc Orthod).
- Submit a research protocol dealing with a specified orthodontic
problem. The Chairperson of the Department of Orthodontics
and the Scientific Committee must approve the research the
protocol.
The Doctoral degree of Dental Sciences
in Orthodontics (DDSc Orthod), is a full time study of a minimum
of 24 months. The DDSc Orthod program consists of the candidate’s
doctoral dissertation research, condensed seminars in advanced
orthodontics and related subjects, Orthodontic Journals Study
Clubs, and clinical orthodontics.
The Orthodontic courses for the
Doctoral degree of Dental Sciences in Orthodontics are covering,
in deeper and wider perspectives, the same topics of orthodontic
courses for the Master’s degree of Dental Sciences in Orthodontics.
The research dissertation
program: At the end of the research project, after
a minimum of 24 months from the registration date, each candidate
is required to submit the results of the original research work
as a doctoral dissertation. The dissertation will be discussed
in public arbitrated by three independent referees. After the
successful public defense of the candidate, the Scientific Committee
will approve the dissertation.
The clinical orthodontic
requirements: A specified number of original cases

must be orthodontically treated to the satisfaction of the Scientific
Board of the Department. The candidate will present to the examination

The final examinations
for the Doctoral degree of Dental Sciences in Orthodontics will
be held after the fulfillment of all the clinical requirements
and after the acceptance of the dissertation by both the Arbitration
Board and the Scientific Committee. These examinations include
a written examination, a practical examination, an oral examination,
and clinical presentations of orthodontic cases.
